Living in Harmony with Creation
The Dena’ina way of life (Dena’ina Ch’ulqet) is rooted in reciprocity, deep respect, and shared responsibility. Every plant, creature, and water course holds place in the landscape. By recognizing these connections, we honor the legacy of stewardship that has preserved this peninsula for generations.
Kenai River
The lifeblood of the peninsula. Kahtnu is our ancestral highway and the source of seasonal harvests since time immemorial, connecting families to the waters.
Salmon
Central to Dena’ina identity, culture, and survival. The annual salmon runs provide sustenance for families, representing a sacred cycle of return and stewardship.
Moose
A crucial source of food, clothing, and traditional tools. We honor the moose, acknowledging its role in supporting human life through the subarctic winters.
Berries
Lingonberries, mossberries, and wild cranberries ripen across the tundra in late summer. Gathering gega connects generations and provides key sustenance.
Mountains
The towering peaks of the Kenai Range that define our horizon. They shape the weather, serve as ancestral markers, and shelter high-altitude wildlife.
Fireweed
The vibrant pink fireweed blossoms signaling the transition of seasons on the peninsula. Fireweed is gathered for traditional tea and natural remedies.
Northern Lights
The aurora borealis painting the winter night sky in ribbons of emerald and violet. A reminder of the spiritual realm and the paths of those before us.
Bald Eagle
The majestic guardian of the coastal skies. Shqit’a represents courage, vision, and the sacred connection between the earth and the heavens.
